I need to know how to maintain my JD 420U. I have the shop manual jd-201 but in fails to tell what maintaince should be done and how. What fluids and where? Is there separate fills for the final drive? Do the hydralics and the transmission mix? Whare are the fill and drain plugs? The engine maintaince in not a problem, it's the rest of the unit I need help with. I could fumble along but I sure could use some advice

Hi, The final drives are separate. I believe there are pipe plugs on the back surface of the final drive housings, maybe three or so inches up from the bottom. They probably take a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove. Just fill these with 80W90 gear oil up to the level plug. The transmission and hydraulics are separate reservoirs also. The transmission fill/level plug should be at your right heel as you sit on the tractor. I believe this might take a 1" wrench or socket. This also takes 80w90 gear oil. The hydraulic reservoir is the rockshaft or three point lift housing. If you remove the seat cushion, there is a breather cap under there that you can pry out with a screwdriver(it is about2-2 1/2 inches in diameter). This is the fill hole. The check plug should be a petcock on the rear of the housing about halfway up. Open the petcock and pour in 10w motor oil from the top until it comes out the open petcock. ....

Thanks for the info. Just what I need. Is there anything special that I should know about this unit? I need to work on the brakes, I hope the manuel covers it properly. Thanks again. ....
